Prakriti Varshney is the first Indian female vegan to ascend the highest peak in the world, Mount Everest. She achieved this feat on May 12, 2022. She is also known for scaling three of the highest mountains in Africa – Mt. Kilimanjaro, Mt. Kenya, and Mt. Stanley. She aims to climb nine more mountains in different countries in the same year.
Early life and education
Prakriti Varshney comes from a middle-class family. Her father is a civil engineer and her mother is a homemaker. She has a younger sister who is an RJ and a voice-over artist, and a younger brother who was in the 12th grade at the time of the source article. Prakriti has a degree in Fashion Designing from JD Institute of Fashion Technology. She was a Fashion and Graphic Designer living in Delhi before she moved to Manali.
Career
Prakriti Varshney, a former fashion designer from Delhi, gave up her regular 9-to-5 job and moved to Manali. Here, she started a homestay for travelers, while staying true to her passion – climbing mountains. After Everest, she recently scaled three of the highest mountains in Africa – Mt. Kilimanjaro, Mt. Kenya, and Mt. Stanley. She aims to climb all the 8000ers in the coming years.
Personal life
Prakriti’s love for animals made her give up all meat-based products and turn vegan. She believes that plant protein was better for her during the climb. She chose this way of life after understanding the harmful effects of dairy farming on the environment. Not only did she switch her diet but also acquired 100 percent vegan expedition mittens and sought to leave minimal impact on the environment during her climb. She also volunteers with an animal rescue NGO and uses her social media platform to spread the message of taking care of all animals.
