Maheep Singh was Born in 1975 in Patiala, Punjab. He is a well-known Indian stand-up comedian and writer, famous for his laid-back, deadpan style and relatable storytelling. He’s often called “The Gujarati Sardar” in comedy circles. Beyond being a funny guy, Maheep founded the New Delhi Comedy Club and has become a prominent name in Indian comedy. His unique blend of humor often draws from his own life experiences, and he started his journey in stand-up comedy as a way to cope with depression. Over the years, he’s used humor to not only entertain but also to connect deeply with his audience.
Early life and education
Maheep grew up in Patiala, Punjab. He attended Khalsa College in his hometown before heading to Himachal Pradesh University, where he earned a Master’s degree in English Literature. During his college days, he was part of the theatre group but had to leave it after graduation due to personal reasons. Despite this, his love for the stage stayed with him and would later lead him to stand-up comedy.
Career
Before stepping into the world of comedy, Maheep worked as a freelance translator for nearly 19 years. He also spent four years as a copyeditor at Aptara, a publishing company, from 1999 to 2003. But it was in his 40s when his comedy career truly took off.
Maheep was introduced to stand-up comedy when he started attending events at Café Rati in New Delhi’s India Habitat Centre. He didn’t immediately jump on stage but found inspiration from fellow comedian Apoorv Gupta, which encouraged him to give it a shot. His first performance was at a comedy show in Greater Kailash, New Delhi, and after that, there was no turning back. He quickly became a regular on the Delhi comedy scene, performing with other comedians and building a reputation for himself.
His first paid show came alongside Apoorv Gupta, where he earned ₹4,000. Since then, Maheep has made a name for himself with his clever, relatable jokes. He co-won the Comedy Central show The Best Stand-up Comedian with Zakir Khan, adding a significant milestone to his career. He has also appeared in TV shows like Baked (2015) and films such as Jaspal (2024). He’s even written several plays, including Nail Polish and Table for Two, but his standout work remains Heer Ke Waris, which he wrote for famous puppeteer Dadi Pudumjee.
Maheep’s comedy sets often come from personal experiences, and he’s known for his unique role as a “demotivational speaker,” where he humorously challenges motivational speakers who he feels promise unrealistic goals.
Personal life
Maheep is married and has a daughter. His personal life has played a big role in shaping his comedy, especially his experience with depression, which he openly discusses in his performances. He turned to comedy as a positive outlet and found it helped him manage his struggles while bringing joy to others.
When he’s not on stage, Maheep enjoys traveling and cooking. He currently lives in New Delhi and continues to run the New Delhi Comedy Club, which he founded in 2013. His love for both comedy and life shines through in everything he does.
